Soft, pale and silky-fine, kaolin is the gentlest of the cosmetic clays. Mixed with a little water it becomes a smooth, creamy mask that feels cool on the skin and rinses away to leave a fresh, clean, gently polished feel.

Also known as white or china clay, kaolin has been used in beauty rituals for centuries and is a favourite for normal to oily skin, used by many people to soak up excess shine and lift away the dust and dirt of the day. It makes a lovely addition to a homemade spa kit and a thoughtful gift for anyone who likes to mix their own face masks.

Stir two teaspoons of clay with an equal amount of water or floral water to make a smooth paste. Apply to face or body and leave for around fifteen minutes, then rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel. Patch test before first use and avoid the eye area.
