What is divination?

Divination is the age-old practice of using symbols to prompt reflection and intuition. Tarot cards, rune stones, pendulums and scrying balls are all tools for this. Most people use them not to predict a fixed future but to think through a question, which is how many readers describe the experience.

Which divination tool should I start with?

Tarot is the most popular starting point because its imagery tells a story. Our tarot decks and accessories include foil card sets with booklets, which are helpful for beginners. Runes suit those drawn to Norse and Northern tradition, while a pendulum is a simple tool for yes and no questions, and scrying is a quieter, more contemplative art.

Take a look at runes in gemstones such as amethyst, green aventurine and snake jasper, or choose a pendulum in a stone you are drawn to.

Setting up an altar

An altar is simply a place set aside for your practice. It can be a shelf, a windowsill or a tray. Our altar and witchcraft tools include brass altar bells in Pentagram, Three Moon and Triquetra designs, ritual chalices and Ancient Witch perfume oils and ritual waters.

Keep your tools in a clean cloth or box when not in use. Many readers like to light a candle or a little incense before beginning, to mark the moment as special.

Questions and answers

Do I need to be psychic to use tarot cards?

No. Tarot is a tool for reflection, and most readers simply respond to the imagery and what it brings to mind. Reading the guidebook and practising with a daily card are enough to get started. Intuition grows with use.

What is the difference between tarot and runes?

Tarot uses a deck of 78 illustrated cards, while runes are a set of stones or tiles marked with symbols from old Germanic alphabets. Tarot tends to be story-led and visual, while runes are brief and symbolic, so many people enjoy both.

How do I use a pendulum?

Hold the chain between thumb and forefinger so the weight hangs still, then ask a clear yes or no question. Notice how it swings. Many people first agree which movement means yes and which means no, before asking anything else.
