How to choose essential oils
Start with a few scents you already enjoy. Lavender, frankincense, mandarin and mint are popular starting points, and our essential oils include Frankincense, Myrrh, Vetivert, Jasmine and Cumin Seed in 10ml bottles. For something ready-made, the Aromatherapy Essential Oil Sets, such as The Top 12 and the Autumn Set, let you try several scents together.
Essential oils are strong, so use them sparingly and never apply them undiluted to skin. If you are pregnant, have a medical condition or use them around pets, check with a professional first.
What is the best way to scent a room?
It depends on how you live. An oil burner warms a few drops of oil over a tealight for a quick, fresh scent. A reed diffuser, such as On Jasmine Wings, Rhubarb Rhubarb or Seasalt and Moss, scents a room quietly all day without a flame.
For a quick refresh, the 100ml Essential Oil Mists in Lime & Ginger, Patchouli, Thyme & Mint and Ylang Ylang & Mandarin can be spritzed onto linen or into the air.
Oils for bath, body and pillow
Many people like to bring scent into their bedtime routine with a pillow spray or a few drops of a diluted oil in a bath. Our roll-ons and blends and massage and bath oils make easy gifts, and all of them are best used in small amounts.
Keep oils in a cool, dark place, with the lid tightly closed, and out of reach of children and pets.
Questions and answers
How do I use an oil burner?
Fill the top dish with a little water, add a few drops of essential oil, and light a tealight in the chamber below. The gentle heat releases the fragrance. Never let the dish boil dry, and keep the burner on a stable, heatproof surface.
Can I put essential oils directly on my skin?
No. Essential oils are very concentrated and should be diluted in a carrier oil before touching skin. Even then, test a small patch first. Avoid contact with eyes and broken skin, and seek advice if you are pregnant or have skin conditions.
How long does a reed diffuser last?
A reed diffuser will typically scent a room for a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the room size, temperature and airflow. Turning the reeds over now and then refreshes the scent. Keep them away from heat and direct sunlight.
Are essential oils safe around pets?
Some essential oils can be harmful to cats, dogs and other animals. Keep oils out of reach, ventilate the room, and avoid diffusing around pets without advice. If you are unsure, ask your vet before using fragrance around your animals.
