What are tumble stones?

Tumble stones are small pieces of rock that have been tumbled and polished until smooth. They are the simplest and most affordable way to begin a crystal collection, and they travel well, so you can carry one in a pocket or bag, set one by your bed or place one on your desk.

How to choose a tumble stone

Pick by feel and meaning. In crystal folklore, amethyst is associated with calm, sodalite with clear thought, unakite with gentle balance, black obsidian with protection, and rock crystal (clear quartz) with clarity. Bloodstone and red jasper are traditionally linked with courage and stamina, while Dragon Stones and Epidote Snowflake are fun, unusual finds.

We stock Medium and Large African Tumble Stones, and some Grade A pieces, such as banded amethyst and rock crystal. The larger sizes sit comfortably in the palm, and the medium ones are ideal for pocket stones, grids and jewellery making.

How to use tumble stones

  • Hold one while you meditate or journal.
  • Carry one as a pocket or purse companion.
  • Arrange several in a bowl, on a windowsill or in a crystal grid.
  • Give one as a small gift, with a note on its meaning.

Our crystal meanings guide explains each stone in more depth. For a boxed starter, try the chakra sets, or browse raw crystals and specimens.

Questions and answers

What is the best tumble stone for beginners?

Clear quartz, amethyst and rose quartz are popular first choices because they are widely loved. Choose whichever you are drawn to, and enjoy learning what each stone is traditionally associated with in folklore.

How do I cleanse tumble stones?

Many people rinse hardy stones briefly in cool water, set them in moonlight, or pass them through incense or sage smoke. Hardy stones like quartz cope well. Check your stone first, as some, like selenite, should stay dry and never be soaked.

Are tumble stones the same shape and colour every time?

No. They are natural stones, so each one varies in shape, colour, banding and size. This is part of their charm, and it means no two are exactly alike, so you can choose a favourite.
