How does a backflow incense burner work?
A backflow burner has a hollow channel running through a sculpted scene. A special backflow cone placed on top burns slowly, and its denser smoke sinks and trickles down the channel, so it looks like a mist or waterfall. The effect is quietly mesmerising, and works best in a draught-free room.
How to choose a backflow burner
Choose by design. Our Backflow Incense Burners include dragons in mountain, pool and waterfall settings, elephants at a pool, Lotus Flower, Money Cat Tube, Large Red Mushroom and Pineapple Mountain & Cascade. The Dolphin Wave and Mountain Scape have a calm, natural look.
Size also matters. Larger burners create a more dramatic flow and are well suited to a sideboard, while smaller ones sit happily on a desk.
Using your burner safely
Place the burner on a flat, heatproof surface away from anything flammable. Light the cone at its tip, wait for it to smoulder, and set it in the hole. Do not use ordinary cones, as they are not made to produce the same effect. Our incense cones, such as Lavender and Sandalwood, are designed to work with these burners.
Clean the burner gently once cool, and keep ash away from the channel. Backflow burners make an eye-catching gift. Explore our other incense holders and burners, or the full incense and smudge range.
Questions and answers
What incense do I use in a backflow burner?
You need specially made backflow cones, which are denser and designed to release smoke that sinks. Ordinary cones and sticks do not create the same effect. Our Biofresh Backflow Cones come in scents such as Lavender, Sandalwood and French Vanilla.
Why is my backflow burner not working?
Make sure you are using genuine backflow cones, that the cone is burning well, and that the room is free from draughts. Check the channel in the burner is clear of ash. Allow a few minutes for the smoke to start flowing.
How do I clean a backflow burner?
Wait until the burner is completely cool, then remove ash with a soft brush or cotton bud, taking care with the channel. Wipe the outside with a dry cloth. Avoid soaking the burner in water, as that can damage the finish.
