What is cleansing and protection in folk tradition?
Across many cultures, people have burned herbs and resins to mark a fresh start, whether after a house move, an argument or a long week. In British folk tradition, protection charms were hung near doors and thresholds, which is why a hamsa on a bag or a box still feels so familiar.
How to choose smudge sticks
Start with what you like the smell of. Himalayan sage with rose and cinnamon is sweet and warm, Indian sage is herbal, and vetiver or vetiver and patchouli is deep and earthy. Our smudge sticks and sage include single herbs and blends, plus a boxed set of six palo santo sticks that works well as a gift.
You will also need a heat-proof dish or shell. See incense holders and burners, and open a window while you work.
Protection jewellery and everyday charms
If smoke is not for you, carry your intention instead. A Bali mala necklace for harmony and protection, a hamsa diffuser necklace, or a terracotta stonewash hamsa bag are quiet, wearable choices. Browse necklaces and pendants for more.
A few drops of frankincense essential oil in a burner is another traditional way to mark a cleansed space. Our essential oils are for fragrance use only and should always be diluted properly before touching skin.
Questions and answers
How do I use a smudge stick?
Light the tip, let the flame settle so it smoulders, and hold it over a heat-proof dish. Walk slowly through the room with a window open, then press the stick out in sand or the dish when you are finished.
What is the difference between sage and palo santo?
White sage and other sages smell herbal and sharp, while palo santo, a fragrant wood, is sweeter and more woody. Both are traditionally used to mark a fresh start in a room, and many people enjoy using them together.
What does a hamsa symbolise?
The hamsa is an open hand with roots in Middle Eastern and North African traditions. It is widely seen as a protective charm, often shown with an eye in the palm, and is popular on jewellery, bags and wall art.
