How to choose a singing bowl

Size shapes the sound. Smaller bowls tend to ring higher and brighter, while larger bowls sound deeper and last longer. Our Earth Powder Singing Bowls at 16cm are a good all-round size for home use, and the Mini Singing Bowl Gift Sets in black, green and red are a lovely starting point.

Chakra Singing Bowls come in root, heart, solar plexus, third eye and throat. Each is linked with a chakra colour and is chosen by people who like to match sound to meditation focus.

How do you play a singing bowl?

Rest the bowl on the palm of your hand or on a cushion. Hold the mallet loosely, strike the rim gently once to wake the tone, then circle the outside rim slowly with steady pressure. Keep your wrist relaxed and the movement even. It takes a little practice, and the sound deepens as you get the rhythm.

Tingsha bells and other sound tools

Tibetan tingsha are small paired cymbals joined by a cord. Strike the edges together and let the ring fade. They come in small, medium and large sizes, and some are decorated with the Five Buddha design. Many people use them to mark the start and end of a meditation.

If you would like more sound for your space, explore our wind chimes and bells and drums and instruments. For a calm routine, pair a bowl with incense and see our calm and sleep picks.

Questions and answers

What is a singing bowl used for?

People use singing bowls to mark the start of a meditation, to create a calm mood at home or as part of a quiet evening routine. In tradition, the sound is used to help focus attention.

Which size singing bowl should I buy?

A bowl around 16cm suits most homes and is easy to hold and play. Choose a mini set to learn the basics, or a larger bowl if you want a deeper tone that lingers for longer.

What is the difference between a singing bowl and a tingsha?

A singing bowl is a bowl you strike or play around the rim with a mallet. Tingsha are two small cymbals joined by a cord and rung together, giving a short, clear chime.

Do singing bowls come with a mallet?

Our singing bowls are supplied for playing, but check each product page for what is included, such as a mallet or cushion. Orders are dispatched within 1-2 working days, with free UK delivery over £40.
