How to choose scented candles
Start with the scent family you already love. Fresh and citrussy notes suit kitchens and bathrooms, while woody, smoky or spiced blends feel at home in a living room on a winter evening. Our scented candles include soy wax jars such as the Agnes + Cat Botanical range, with names like Moorland, Windermere and Rydal Oudh.
Size matters too. A small votive is lovely for a desk or bedside table, while a larger jar gives a longer, steadier glow for a main room.
What is the difference between candles and wax melts?
A candle burns a wick, while a wax melt is warmed gently in an electric or tealight burner, so there is no flame in the wax itself. A box of wax melts, such as Clementine, White Fig or Tea + Roses, is a good way to try several scents before committing to a full jar.
Candles in folk tradition
Candle magic is one of the oldest and simplest forms of folk practice. Many people light a coloured candle while setting an intention for love, luck or protection, and our ritual and spell candles are made for exactly that. Pair them with a sturdy candle holder so they sit safely while they burn.
Whatever you choose, remember that fragrance is personal, so go with what you love. Trim the wick before each burn and never leave a flame unattended. Candles also make an easy, welcome gift, especially when you match the scent to the person.
Questions and answers
What are the best scented candles for a living room?
Warm, rounded scents such as woodsmoke, oudh, fig or spiced blends tend to suit larger living spaces. A larger soy wax jar will fill a room more evenly than a small votive. Choose a scent you enjoy, as personal taste matters most.
How do wax melts work?
Wax melts are small scented pieces of wax placed in a burner, where gentle heat from an electric element or a tealight softens them and releases fragrance. There is no wick or flame touching the wax. Once the scent fades, simply replace the melted wax with a fresh piece.
How do I make my candle last longer?
Trim the wick to about 5mm before every burn, and let the wax melt right across the surface the first time you light it. This helps the candle burn evenly rather than tunnelling. Keep candles away from draughts and burn them for a few hours at a time.
