All tarotAbout the Past, Present, Future spread
The three card spread is the most popular tarot reading in the world, and for good reason. It is quick to lay out and easy to understand, yet three cards side by side already begin to tell a story.
The first card looks at the past, the influences that brought you here. The second card is the present, what is unfolding now. The third card points to the future, not as a fixed fate but as the direction things may take if nothing changes. Reading them together, you can often see a pattern you could not see from inside the situation.
The three positions
- PastThe experiences and influences behind you that have helped shape where you find yourself now.
- PresentWhat is unfolding for you at this moment, and the energy most worth noticing right now.
- FutureA possible direction if things continue as they are, offered as gentle guidance rather than certainty.
How to read it
Hold your question in mind, press Shuffle the deck and choose 3 cards by instinct. Each card turns over in its place with its traditional meaning, followed by a written reading that draws the cards together. You can also try the Card of the Day and the Celtic Cross spreads, or browse all 78 tarot card meanings.

Past, Present, Future: questions and answers
What does a past, present, future tarot reading show?
It shows a short story: what has shaped the situation, what is happening now and a likely direction if things continue as they are. It is designed for reflection rather than fixed prediction.
Is a three card reading accurate?
We see tarot as a mirror rather than a forecast. A three card reading is useful for seeing your situation from a new angle, and its value comes from how you reflect on it.
What other three card spreads are there?
Popular variations include situation, action, outcome; mind, body, spirit; and you, the other person, the relationship. Our journal guide to simple tarot spreads explains several of these.
Should I ask a question for a three card reading?
It helps. An open question such as "What do I need to understand about this decision?" gives the cards a clear focus. You can also leave it blank for a general reading.
Is this tarot reading really free?
Yes, completely. There is no charge, no sign-up, no email address and no account. Choose a spread, shuffle, pick your cards and your reading appears on the page.
Do I need to sign up or give my email?
No. You can draw as many readings as you like without creating an account or leaving any details. We do not save your question or your cards.
Who writes the written reading?
The written reading is generated by AI from the traditional meaning of each card in its position and the question you asked. The card meanings beside your spread were written by us for this deck.
Can tarot predict the future?
We see tarot as a mirror for reflection rather than a way to predict fixed events. The cards offer a fresh way to look at a situation, and the choices remain yours.
Is tarot a substitute for professional advice?
No. Tarot is for reflection and enjoyment. For questions about health, money, legal matters or your safety, please speak to a qualified professional.
