A Simple Full Moon Ritual You Can Do at Home

A calm, step-by-step full moon ritual using candles, crystals and a little quiet, with the folklore that has made this night special for generations.

A full moon ritual is simply a small, deliberate pause on the night the moon is at its brightest. You need no special training: a quiet corner, a candle, a few minutes of stillness and an intention you would like to carry through the coming weeks. Here is a simple version you can do at home.

Why the full moon has always mattered

For as long as people have watched the sky, the full moon has marked the turning of the month. In British folk tradition, farmers and gardeners kept an eye on the moon for sowing and harvest, and country sayings about moonlit nights were passed from one generation to the next. Many people today use the full moon as a moment to look back, let go of what feels heavy and set a fresh direction.

If you like to plan ahead, our moon calendar lists the dates, and the Wheel of the Year shows how each full moon sits within the turning seasons.

What you will need

Keep it simple. Most of this you may already have at home.

  • A white or silver candle, or any candle that feels right, ideally in a safe holder
  • A small crystal such as clear quartz or moonstone
  • Paper and a pen
  • A heat-safe dish for burning a small piece of paper, if you wish
  • Incense, a smudge stick or a cup of herbal tea to mark the start
  • A bowl of water, if you would like to charge it in the moonlight

If you are building a little collection, take a look at ritual and spell candles, a pretty candle holder to sit them in, and our altar and witchcraft tools for dishes, wands and other helpful pieces.

A step-by-step full moon ritual

  1. Prepare your space. Tidy the area, open a window for a moment and dim the lights. Many people like to light a stick of incense or a smudge stick to mark the shift from the everyday to something quieter. Always keep a dish beneath it and never leave it unattended.
  2. Settle yourself. Sit comfortably, place both feet on the floor and take a few slow breaths. Let your shoulders drop.
  3. Light your candle. As you light it, say aloud or silently what you are marking tonight. Something as simple as "I welcome the light of this full moon" is enough.
  4. Release. Write down what you are ready to leave behind: a worry, a habit, an old argument. Read it through once, then safely burn it in your dish, or tear it up if you prefer.
  5. Invite. On a fresh piece of paper, write two or three things you would like to welcome in. Keep them kind and realistic. Fold the paper and tuck it beneath your crystal.
  6. Sit with the moon. If the sky is clear, step outside or sit by a window. If it is cloudy, remember the moon is still there. Stay for a few minutes and simply notice how you feel.
  7. Close. Thank the moon in your own words, then snuff out the candle rather than blowing it out, as is traditional.

Choosing crystals for the night

Clear quartz is a favourite because it is simple and bright. Moonstone is traditionally associated with moon energy, selenite with a calm, clean feeling, and amethyst with quiet reflection. Many people also set their stones on a windowsill overnight to sit in the moonlight. If you would like to know more about the meaning of particular stones, our crystal meanings guide is a good place to begin, and you can browse tumble stones for small, affordable pieces to start with.

Ideas to make it your own

  • Take a slow bath with bath salts by candlelight before you begin
  • Draw a single tarot card and journal about what it brings to mind
  • Brew a pot of calming herbal tea and drink it as you reflect
  • Place a bowl of water outside overnight and use it to rinse your crystals in the morning
  • Keep a moon journal so you can look back over the months

There is no wrong way to do this. A ritual works best when it feels natural to you, so adjust the steps freely and keep only what resonates. Over time, many people find that returning to the same few gestures each month, the same candle, the same cup of tea, becomes a comforting rhythm in itself.

Bring it home

A full moon ritual needs very little, but a few lovely things can make the evening feel special. Browse our candles, crystals and gemstones or ready-made ritual sets, and let the moon do the rest.

Questions and answers

What do you do on a full moon?

Most people light a candle, spend a few quiet minutes reflecting, write down what they would like to release and what they would like to welcome, and sit with the moonlight. Some also cleanse crystals or journal. Keep it as simple as you like.

Do I need to see the moon for a full moon ritual?

No. The moon is still full on a cloudy night, and many people feel the ritual works just as well indoors. If you can, open a window or step outside for a moment, but it is not essential.

How long should a full moon ritual take?

A simple ritual can take as little as ten to fifteen minutes. If you would like to add a bath, journalling or a card reading, allow thirty minutes to an hour. There is no set length, so go with what feels comfortable.
