What do I need for a witch's altar?

An altar needs very little. A flat surface, a cloth, a candle and one or two objects that matter to you are enough. Over time, many people add tools such as a bell, a chalice, a bowl for offerings and a few stones. The most important element is that the space feels like yours.

Choosing altar tools

Brass bells are traditionally rung to mark the start and end of a ritual. Our Altar Brass Bells come in Pentagram, Three Moon and Triquetra designs. The Antique Copper Ritual Chalice, with its Triple Moon design, serves as a vessel for water or an offering.

The Ancient Witch range adds fragrance and atmosphere, from perfume oils such as Hecate, Eclipse Oud and Cursed to Ritual Waters such as Avalon Island and Lady of the Lake, plus bath spell potions with crystal amulets for Love and Prosperity.

Setting the scene

Candles and incense help to set the mood. Light a ritual candle to mark your intention, and clear the air first with a smudge stick. If you read cards or runes, keep them nearby, and explore our tarot decks.

There are no strict rules. Choose items that suit your tradition, tidy the altar as often as you like, and keep it as a place for quiet and reflection. A set of tools also makes a lovely gift for a friend beginning a practice.

Questions and answers

What should be on a witch's altar?

Traditionally, an altar holds candles, a bowl or chalice, incense, a bell and objects with personal meaning, such as stones or herbs. Many people also arrange items to mark the seasons. There is no fixed list, so include what feels right.

What is an altar bell used for?

A bell is rung to mark the beginning or end of a ritual, to clear a space, or to call attention. The clear ringing sound is used to clear a space in many traditions. Many people simply enjoy it as a calming moment.

How do I begin practising witchcraft?

Start simply: read widely, learn the seasons and set up a small altar. Light a candle with an intention and keep a notebook. Folk magic is a practical craft, so build confidence through small, regular practices before buying lots of tools.

Are ritual waters and perfume oils for use on skin?

Check the product description and label for how each item is meant to be used. Perfume oils are designed to be worn as fragrance, but always test a tiny amount first, and keep them away from the eyes and any broken skin.
