How do bath bombs work?
A bath bomb is a mix of bicarbonate of soda and citric acid that fizzes when it touches water, releasing colour, fragrance and often a little sparkle. Drop one into a warm bath and watch it dissolve. Most people use one per bath. Bath eggs, in trays of six, work in a similar way.
How to choose bath bombs
Choose by scent first. Fruity sets such as Cherry, Blackberry, Hawaiian Mango and Cranberry smell bright and sweet. Coconut Dream, Chocolate & Orange and Apple Pie & Custard are like dessert in the tub, while Lavender & Seeds and Ocean feel calmer and fresher. Baby Powder is a soft, comforting classic.
Most sets come as three bath bombs, so you can try the scent a few times or share with a friend. The Five for Her and Five for Him sets are a ready-made present, and the Christmas bath bomb gift packs, Follow the Star and Break the Ice, are a festive favourite.
Tips for a better bath
- Run the water warm rather than very hot.
- Drop the bomb in once the tub is partly full.
- Rinse the bath afterwards, as colour can cling to the surface.
- Keep pets and small children out of the water while the bomb fizzes.
Tuck bath bombs in with a soap and a scented candle for an easy present. Our bath salts and soaks are another lovely alternative.
Questions and answers
Do bath bombs stain the bath?
Some strongly coloured bombs can leave a faint film on the tub. Rinse the bath straight after use, and wipe it with a soft cloth. White or pale baths may show colour more than dark ones.
Are bath bombs suitable for sensitive skin?
Scented and coloured bath bombs may not suit everyone. Check the ingredients, and if your skin is sensitive, try a patch test or choose a gentler scent. Rinse off afterwards if you feel any irritation, and stop using the product if it continues.
How many bath bombs should I use at once?
One bomb per bath is plenty. Using more will make the water more intensely coloured and scented, but it may also make the tub slippery and harder to rinse afterwards.
