How to choose a scented candle

Think about the mood you want. Woody and smoky scents such as Ash & Woodsmoke and Moorland feel cosy in autumn and winter. Florals like Roses of Sawrey and Midnight Rose are softer, and fresh blends such as Cedar Citrus or Seasalt & Moss suit lighter, brighter rooms.

If you are not sure, a scent you already like in a perfume, a garden or a favourite holiday spot is a good guide.

What is a soy wax candle?

Soy wax is a plant-based wax that many people prefer for its smooth, even burn. The Agnes + Cat Botanical Soy Wax Candles, with scents including Fellberry, Lakeland Mocha, Rydal Oudh and Windermere, are poured into jars you can reuse once finished. Greenman Woodwick candles use a flat wooden wick that makes a soft crackling sound, a little like a fire.

Caring for your candle

For the best burn, let the wax melt right across the top the first time you light it, and trim the wick before each use. Place your candle on a candle holder or heatproof surface, and never leave a flame unattended.

Scented candles also make an easy gift, particularly when you choose a scent that suits the person's home. Prefer a lower-effort fragrance without a flame? Try our wax melts or a reed diffuser. Smaller votives are available in our pillar, dinner and tealight candles.

Questions and answers

What is the best scented candle for a gift?

A candle in a classic, crowd-pleasing scent such as fig, rose, woodsmoke or citrus is a safe choice. If you know the person's tastes, match the fragrance to those. A pretty jar in a gift box always feels thoughtful.

What does a woodwick candle do differently?

A woodwick candle has a thin, flat wooden wick instead of cotton. As it burns, it makes a gentle crackling sound similar to a log fire, and the flame is often wider. Trim the wick to about 5mm before each burn.

How long should I burn a candle for?

Burn your candle for a few hours at a time, and for long enough that the wax melts to the edge of the jar. This helps it burn evenly. Extinguish it if the flame flickers a lot or the jar gets very hot.

Can I reuse the candle jar?

Yes. Once the candle has burnt down and cooled, you can wash out any remaining wax with warm water and use the jar for storing small items, or as a plant pot or pen holder.
