Aum, or Om, is the sacred sound of Hindu and Buddhist tradition, said to contain the vibration of the universe, and it is often chanted at the start and end of meditation. Light a stick, blow out the flame and chant Aum three times as the smoke begins to rise, feeling the sound in your chest. Then sit in silence. Use a suitable holder on a heat-safe surface, and never leave burning incense unattended.
