How to choose a crystal heart or carving

Think about how you will use it. A crystal heart sits nicely in the palm, so choose a smooth, comfortable size, such as our Chakra Hearts at 45-60mm. A larger carving, like a Gemstone Large Buddha or Gemstone Angel, is made to stand on a shelf, altar or bedside table.

Then choose the stone. Rose quartz hearts are traditionally associated with love and gentleness, amethyst with calm, and green aventurine with luck. Jade and Que Sera stone carvings have a rich, deep look that suits a quiet corner of the home.

Crystal shapes and what they are for

Our Four Gemstone Shapes sets give you a small collection in one stone, such as amazonite, epidote or rainbow moonstone, which is lovely for gifting or for starting a collection. Carved pieces tend to be chosen for their symbolism: angels for protection in folklore, Buddhas for peace and patience, hearts for affection.

If you prefer a simpler form, take a look at tumble stones or a smooth crystal sphere. For stones to carry, see our gemstone jewellery.

Looking after polished crystals

Wipe polished shapes with a soft damp cloth and dry them well. Keep them away from harsh cleaners. Some stones fade in strong sunlight, and softer ones can scratch, so store carvings separately rather than loose in a bag. Our crystal-infused glass water bottles are for display and infusion-style decoration only, so follow the care card supplied.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a crystal heart and a palmstone?

A crystal heart is carved into a heart shape and polished, while a palmstone is a smooth, flat oval made to fit the hand. Both are lovely to hold, and hearts are especially popular as gifts.

Which crystal heart is best for a gift?

Rose quartz is the classic choice for someone you love, as it is traditionally associated with affection. Amethyst suits a friend who likes calm, and a chakra heart is a good option if you want a mix of colours.

How do I cleanse a crystal carving?

Most people wipe polished carvings with a soft cloth, leave them in moonlight overnight, or pass them through smoke from incense or a smudge stick. Check the stone first, as some are softer or can fade in sunlight.

Are crystal carvings handmade?

Carved stones are shaped and polished, so each piece varies a little in colour, banding and finish. That means yours will be slightly different from the product photo, which is part of the charm of natural stone.
