What are essential oils?
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic oils taken from plants, such as flowers, resins, seeds and roots. They are very strong, so they are used a few drops at a time, diluted, and never swallowed. Their scents have been valued for centuries in perfumery, incense and household traditions.
How to choose essential oils
If you are starting out, English Lavender or Lavender Organic is the friendliest first bottle, loved for its soft, floral aroma. Frankincense and Myrrh have an ancient, resinous scent often used around meditation and ritual. Vetivert is earthy and deep, Jasmine is rich and floral, and Cumin Seed is warm and spicy. Tea Tree has a sharp, clean, medicinal smell familiar to many households.
If you want variety, try an Aromatherapy Essential Oil Set, such as The Top 12 or the Autumn Set, or a boxed blend like Sleep Easy or Soothing.
How to use essential oils
- Add a few drops to water in an oil burner.
- Dilute in a carrier oil before it touches skin, and always patch test.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets, and check guidance if you are pregnant.
Pair an oil with a reed diffuser, a massage oil, or a few quiet moments with resins such as frankincense, which has long been burned in ritual and prayer, and lovely for setting the mood at home.
Questions and answers
Can I put essential oils directly on my skin?
Generally no. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diluted in a carrier oil before touching skin. Patch test first and avoid the eyes and broken skin. If you are pregnant or have a medical condition, seek advice from a professional.
Are essential oils safe for pets?
Some oils can be harmful to cats, dogs and other animals, so use caution. Keep bottles out of reach, ventilate the room, and ask your vet before using oils around animals.
How should I store essential oils?
Keep them in their original dark glass bottles with the lid closed tightly, somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Stored well, most oils keep their scent for a good while. Always keep them away from children.
