How do you use an oil burner?
An oil burner has a small dish above a space for a tealight. Add a little water to the dish, then a few drops of essential oil, and light the tealight underneath. The gentle warmth lifts the scent into the room. Never leave it unattended, and top up the water so it does not dry out.
Which oil burner should you choose?
Soapstone is a lovely, smooth, naturally heat-resistant stone, and our soapstone burners come carved with elephants, Om symbols, Hamsa hands and mandala flowers. Mango wood burners, such as the Moon Goddess, Tree of Life and Buddha Face designs, have a rich, hand-finished look and suit an altar or shelf. Plain stone styles like Classic, Abstract Cuts and the Combo Lantern are timeless and easy to match with any room.
Size matters too. A small 8cm burner is ideal for a bedside table or desk, while the large 13x10cm or square wood designs make a statement in a living room.
A first oil burner set
New to burning oils? The Oil Burner, Fragrance Oils & Tealights Kit has what you need to begin. Choose from our essential oils for scents such as lavender or frankincense, and keep spare tealights from the pillar, dinner & tealight range close by.
An oil burner makes a thoughtful present for anyone who loves a calm home. Add a bottle of oil, and perhaps a reed diffuser for the days when you would rather not light a flame.
Questions and answers
Can I use any oil in an oil burner?
Essential oils and fragrance oils made for burners are the usual choice. Use only a few drops in water, and avoid heavy cooking oils or anything not intended for burning. Always follow the guidance on the bottle.
How many drops of oil should I use?
Around four to six drops of essential oil in the water is a good starting point for an average room. You can add a little more for larger spaces, but a gentle scent is usually more pleasant than a strong one.
Are soapstone burners better than ceramic?
Neither is better. Soapstone is a natural stone that is smooth, sturdy and holds warmth well, and each piece is slightly different. Ceramic and wood styles have their own looks, so choose the design you like best.
How do I clean an oil burner?
Let it cool completely, then wipe the dish with a soft cloth and a little warm soapy water. Remove any old wax from the tealight holder. Dry it fully before using again, particularly if it is a stone or wood design.
