Why follow the moon?
For thousands of years, people have planted, harvested, gathered and celebrated by the moon. In folk magic, its monthly journey is a simple rhythm to live by: the new moon for beginnings and intentions, the waxing moon for growth and drawing things in, the full moon for celebration, gratitude and charging your crystals, and the waning moon for letting go, clearing and rest.
A moon ritual does not need to be elaborate. A candle, a few quiet minutes and a clear intention are enough. Many people keep a small moon journal and look back at it each month.
How to make moon water
On the night of the full moon, fill a clean glass jar or bowl with water and leave it on a windowsill or outside where the moonlight can reach it. Bring it in before the sun is high. Moon water is traditionally used to water plants, cleanse your altar, add to a bath or anoint candles. It is for ritual use, so we suggest you do not drink it.
Charging crystals under the full moon
Lay your crystals on a windowsill overnight at the full moon. Moonstone, clear quartz and amethyst are favourites. Selenite is often used to cleanse other crystals, but it is soft and dissolves in water, so keep it dry and never put it in moon water.
A simple full moon ritual
- On the night of the full moon, tidy a small space by a window and light a white candle in a safe holder.
- Place your crystals and a bowl of water on the windowsill to catch the moonlight.
- Write down what you are grateful for this month, and one thing you are ready to let go of.
- Read your list aloud, then tear off the part you are letting go of and fold it away, or safely burn it in a heat-proof dish.
- Sit with the flame for a while, then snuff it out. Bring in your moon water in the morning. Never leave a candle burning unattended.
A new moon intention ritual
- On the night of the new moon, or the day after, light a white candle in a quiet, dark room.
- Write down one to three things you would like to grow over the coming month, as if they are already happening.
- Hold a moonstone or a piece of labradorite and read your intentions aloud.
- Fold the paper and keep it on your altar or under the candle holder until the full moon, then read it again.

Moon rituals: questions and answers
What should I do on a full moon?
The full moon is traditionally a time for gratitude, celebration and letting go. Light a white candle, write down what you are thankful for and what you are ready to release, charge your crystals on a windowsill and make moon water.
What is a new moon ritual?
A new moon ritual is a simple way to set intentions for the month ahead. Light a candle, write down one to three things you would like to grow, and keep the paper on your altar until the full moon.
How do you make moon water?
Leave a clean glass jar or bowl of water where the full moonlight can reach it overnight, then bring it in the next morning. It is used for watering plants, cleansing an altar, baths and anointing candles. It is for ritual use, so we suggest you do not drink it.
Which crystals are best for moon rituals?
Moonstone, selenite and labradorite are the classic moon crystals, with clear quartz and amethyst also popular. Keep selenite dry, as it dissolves in water.
What colour candle is used for a full moon ritual?
White or silver candles are traditional for the full moon, for clarity, peace and reflection. Many people also use a candle in the colour of their intention.
When is the next full moon?
Our moon calendar shows the current phase and the dates of the next full and new moons. The home page also counts down to the next full moon.
