Creating a bedtime ritual
For centuries, people have marked the end of the day with small rituals: a sprig of lavender tucked into the linen, a candle carried up the stairs, a few quiet words before sleep. Scent is one of the simplest ways to do the same today. Used at the same time each evening, a familiar fragrance becomes a signal to yourself that the day is done.
Lavender is the classic choice, but many people prefer chamomile, sandalwood or a ready-made sleep blend. The best scent is simply the one you find most soothing to come home to.
Diffuser, bath or pillow?
An aroma diffuser fills the bedroom gently while you get ready for bed. A bath with lavender salts or a blended bath oil makes a calming start to the evening. A pillow mist or eye pillow keeps the scent close, and a roll-on blend is easy to keep on the bedside table or take away with you.
A 10-minute bedtime ritual
- Dim the lights an hour or so before bed and put your phone out of reach.
- Add 3 to 5 drops of lavender or a sleep blend to your diffuser, or run a warm bath with bath salts.
- Light a candle while you read, stretch or write a few lines in a journal.
- Set a moonstone or amethyst on the bedside table as a small reminder to let the day go.
- Snuff the candle and switch off the diffuser before you fall asleep. Never leave a candle burning unattended.
Using essential oils safely
Essential oils are very concentrated. Never apply them to skin undiluted, never swallow them, and keep them out of reach of children and pets. Some oils are not suitable for use around cats, dogs or young children, so check before diffusing. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a health condition, speak to your doctor before using essential oils. Our oils are sold for fragrance and home use, not as a treatment for any condition.
Essential oils for sleep: questions and answers
Which essential oils are popular for bedtime?
Lavender is the best-loved evening scent, followed by chamomile, sandalwood, cedarwood, bergamot and frankincense. Many people prefer a ready-made sleep blend that combines several of these.
How many drops of lavender should I put in a diffuser?
Around 3 to 5 drops in a standard ultrasonic diffuser is plenty for a bedroom. Always follow the instructions that come with your diffuser.
Can I leave a diffuser on overnight?
Many diffusers switch off automatically when the water runs out, but it is best to run one for 30 to 60 minutes before bed and switch it off when you settle down, with a window slightly open.
Can I put essential oils on my pillow?
Use a pillow mist made for the purpose, or a drop of oil on a cotton pad tucked near your pillow, rather than putting undiluted oil directly on fabric or skin.
